The OM Connection

Updated: Oct 20, 2022

וּבִקַּשְׁתֶּם אֹתִי וּמְצָאתֶם

כִּי תִדְרְשֻׁנִי בְּכָל-לְבַבְכֶם

ירמיה כט:יג

"And you will seek Me and find Me

when you search for Me with all your heart."

Jeremiah 29:13

My niece, a wonderful holistic reproductive health practitioner and yoga instructor, told me that although Hinduism seems quite pagan, they view their hundreds of gods as diverse manifestations of a central creative force beginning with the sound OM.

Reflecting on this, I think of God speaking the universe into existence:

וַיֹּאמֶר אֱלֹהִים

יְהִי אוֹר

וַיְהִי-אוֹר

בראשית א:ג

"And God said,

'Let there be light,'

and there was light."

Genesis 1:3

The first Hebrew word here is:

וַיֹּאמֶר

VayOMer

and He said

So could the Torah be the origin of the concept that everything begins with the sound OM?

VayOMer occurs 1896 times throughout the Tanakh when Creator communicates with creation.

Many cultures have creation, garden, and flood stories. These similarities point to a shared original source of revelation before languages and nations scattered after the Tower of Babel.

We have lots to learn from each other to elevate awareness of the One infinite eternal God. Our spirit-mind-body relationship is key. Both Judaism and Hinduism attune to food and sexuality, plus combine prayer with movement. My niece has inspired me to breathe deeply with greater awareness of drawing the wind/Spirt/Ruach into my being.

יִשָּׂ֨א יְהוָ֤ה פָּנָיו֙ אֵלֶ֔יךָ

וְיָשֵׂ֥ם לְךָ֖

שָׁלֽוֹם

במדבר ו:כו

"HaShem lift his countenance to you,

and give you

ShalOM."

Numbers 6:26

God blesses us with ability to see, hear, smell, taste, and feel. Our material vessels accommodate our spiritual journeys. We crave connection...

יֵ֣צֶר סָמ֔וּךְ

תִּצֹּ֖ר

שָׁל֣וֹם שָׁל֑וֹם

כִּ֥י בְךָ֖ בָּטֽוּחַ

ישעיה טז:ג

"The reliant inclination

You will keep

ShalOM ShalOM; because trusting in You."

Isaiah 16:3

As we seek unifying truth at the root of diverse world views, we see that what we share in common leads us closer to the Source of life and light and love and

peace

wholeness

ShalOM

שלום
