Mystery of the missing Nun

Updated: Jan 23, 2023

In Psalm 145 and the Ashrei prayer which is derived from it, each verse begins with a sequential letter of the Hebrew alphabet. Nun, which is 14th of the 22 letters, is missing

"Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,

and Your dominion endures throughout all generations."

Psalms 145:13

נ

"HaShem sustains all who fall

and raises up all who are bowed down."

Psalms 145:14

Emphasis shifts between these two verses from God's dominion to His care. The missing Nun is the connecting link, the true vine nourishing fruit from roots.

Please try inserting Yeshua's humble arrival as suffering servant around Hebrew year 3790 (30 C.E.) in the place of the missing Nun. Many expect Messiah's coming in glory near the start of the 7th (Shabbat) millennium which would be around year 6000 (2240 C.E.). Note the essentially equal ratios:

14/22 (letters) = 0.636

3790/6000 (years) = 0.632

The letter Nun has two forms:

  • humbly bent at the beginning or in the middle of a word: נ

  • standing upright at the end of a word: ן

Three verses in the Torah begin with the bent regular Nun and end with the upright Nun Sofit. Each of these verses relates to Yeshua.

The first of these verses is about healing:

"When there will be a leprous affliction in a person;

he shall be brought to the priest."

Leviticus 13:9

The second is about crossing into the promised land:

"We will cross over armed before HaShem,

into the land of Canaan;

and with us possession of our inheritance

across the Jordan."

Numbers 32:32

In the third of these verses beginning and ending with Nun, Moshe speaks to Israel:

"A prophet from your midst,

from your brothers,

like me,

HaShem your God will raise for you;

to him you will listen."

Deuteronomy 18:15

Yehoshua (aka Joshua), successor of Moshe with essentially the same name as Yeshua, was the son of Nun:

"Yehoshua son of Nun"

Exodus 33:11

And ינון from Psalms 72 is mentioned in the Talmud as a name of Messiah:

"His name will be eternal,

before the sun,

Yinon his name,

and all nations will be blessed in him."

Psalm 72:17

Moshe brought two tablets engraved with the Ten Commandments down from Mount Sinai twice:

  • the first time to be tragically shattered

"And when he came near the camp

and saw the calf and the dancing,

Moses’ anger burned hot,

and he threw the tablets out of his hands

and smashed them at the foot of the mountain."

Exodus 32:19

  • then the second time in radiant glory

"And when Moses came down from Mount Sinai

with the two tablets of the testimony in his hand

as he came down from the mountain,

Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone

in his talking with Him."

Exodus 34:29

So the Word of God came to us in material form:

  • the first time to be shattered

  • the second time in radiant glory

Let's ponder this pattern as we await return of Messiah!
