Prophecies of Yeshua as manifestation of Messiah

Updated: Sep 17, 2023

  • God is One, beyond beginning or end, Source of all

  • Word of God flows from spiritual to material realm - Voice of Creator speaks to universe of space and time

  • Arm of God reaches out to embrace creation - Spirit of Messiah shows us the Way, the Truth, the Life

  • this redeeming Right Hand touches our world whenever HaShem appears or speaks through Word/Voice/Spirit/Messiah

Let's explore some prophecies that relate to embodiment of the Word of God, the Spirit of Messiah, in Yeshua. Scripture contains many layers of meaning, so please be open to concurrent levels of understanding:

Peshat - simple, literal

Remez - hint, allusion, suggestion, type

Drash - inquiry, insight, connection, application

Sod - secret, mystical

These four aspects of Torah form the acronym:

PARDeS

orchard, garden

Genesis 1:1

"In beginning God created Alef-Tav..."

  • Alef-Tav is the first-last letter of the Hebrew language (like A-Z in English or Alpha-Omega in Greeek)

  • this is the Word through which God spoke all into existence

  • this is the Word that was incarnated in Yeshua

  • please see blog "את" for more on this

Genesis 1:2

"And the earth was tohu vavohu,

and darkness upon the face of the deep;

and the Spirit of God hovering upon the face of the waters."

  • Jewish sages comment that the gematria (numeric value) of:

"and the Spirit of God hovering upon the face of the waters"

220+77+728+100+140+95=1,360

1+3+6+0=10

1+0=1

  • is equal to:

"this is the Spirit of the King the Messiah"

28+220+330+95+354=1,027

1+0+2+7=10

1+0=1

Genesis 1:26

"And God said,

'Let us make man in our image,

as our likeness'"

  • Us = God+angels, God+heavens&earth, God+Spirit/Word???

Genesis 2:7

"And HaShem God formed the man

dirt from the land,

and blew into his nostrils the breath of life,

and man became a living soul."

  • body from earth, Life from God

  • Adam - formed by union of matter (dirt from land) with spirit (נשמה breath of life)

  • Yeshua - formed by union of matter (seed of woman) with spirit (רוח הקודש the Holy Spirit)

Genesis 3:15

"And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; he will crush your head, and you will bruise his heel.”

  • her seed זרעה - seed of a woman

  • Messiah to be injured by serpent and will ultimately overcome this adversary who promotes evil and death

Genesis 11:7

"Come, let Us go down

and there confuse their language,

so that they will not understand one another's speech."

  • Us = God+angels, God+Spirit/Word??

  • Please compare the reverse of this rift in communication to when the Holy Spirit integrates language in Acts 2:6:

"And when that sound occurred,

all the people gathered

and were perplexed,

because every one of them heard them

speaking in their own tongues."

Genesis 12:3

"And I will bless those who bless you ,   and the one who curses you I will curse;   and in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.”

  • God promises to bless all nations through Avram

  • Yeshua fulfills this promise

Genesis 22

  • Akeda (Binding of Yitschak)

  • Yitzchak trusts and submits to will of his father, carries his own wood up the hill, is spared from sacrifice by substitutionary death of ram, not seen again until meets his bride in Genesis 24

  • Olah (burnt offering, entirely ascending) - about faith, drawing near, God's provision

  • The three matzot at Passover Seder can represent Avraham, Yitzchak, and Yaakov. The middle matzah is broken in two. The larger half (afikomen) is hidden, discovered by children, then enjoyed for dessert. Yeshua was buried, is risen, and will reappear as Messiah awaited by Jews and Christians who are together in the Word of God.

"And Jacob was left alone;

and a man wrestled with him

  • deliverance from slavery and death

  • passage through blood to life in family of God

"And then about the goat of sin offering,

Moses inquired diligently,

and behold it had already been burned!

And he was angry with Elazar and Itamar,

Aaron’s remaining sons,

saying,

'Why did you not eat the sin offering in the holy place?

For it is most holy,

and He has given it to you

to bear the guilt of the congregation

and to make atonement for them before HaShem.'"

  • between דָּרֹ֥שׁ דָּרַ֛שׁ is midpoint of the Torah in word count

  • inquiring deeply into the goat (or lamb) of God that bears our sin is central to our relationship with Scripture

  • we are called to consume the offering which God provides to bear our guilt and make atonement; partaking of the Word fills us with the Holy Spirit

“A prophet from among you,

from your brothers,

like me,

HaShem your God will raise up for you;

to him you will listen."

  • in this verse Moses speaks to the people of Israel

  • both Moses and Yeshua communicated directly with God

  • both Moses and Yeshua served roles of prophet, priest, leader, teacher

  • Word of God spoke through Moshe and lived among us as Yeshua

Deuteronomy 29:3

unto this day."

  • Moshe (like Yeshua) exhorts the Israelites to truly see and hear the wonders and Word of God

2 Samuel 7:17

"Elijah approached all the people and said,

'How long will you keep passing between the two opinions?

If HaShem is God, follow Him,

and if Baal, follow him!'

And the people did not answer him a word."

  • Elijah's offering accepted - consumed

  • sacrifices from 850 false prophets rejected

  • Yeshua accepted - raised

  • Elijah asks the people to choose between the majority and the truth

Isaiah 1:1

they will be like wool.'"

  • we are cleansed by and for contact with the Divine

Isaiah 6:7-10

"He touched my mouth and said,

'Behold, this has touched your lips,

and your iniquity will be removed

and your sin atoned for.'

And I heard the voice of the Lord saying,

'Whom will I send,

and who will go for us?

Then I said,

'Here I am! Send me.'

And he said,

'Go and tell this people:

Hear hearing, but do not understand,

and see seeing, but do not know.

make the heart of this people fat,

and make their ears heavy,

and shut their eyes,

lest they see with their eyes,

and hear with their ears,

and understand with their heart

and return,

and be healed'"

  • seraph touches Isaiah's lips with a coal from God's altar which cleanses his sin

  • Voice of God speaks for "Us" (Us = God+Spirit/Word/Voice?) about the people not understanding

  • Yeshua refers to Isaiah 6:9-10 in all 4 gospels (Matthew 13:14, Mark 4:12, Luke 8:10, John 12:40) as prophecy fulfilled by Jewish leaders hearing but not understanding him, seeing but not knowing him

Isaiah 7:14

"Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign:

Behold, the maiden is pregnant

and is giving birth to a son,

and you will call his name God with us.

  • Almah עלמה is pregnant - same root as Olam עולם - world, eternity

  • the word Harah הרה pregnant is closely related to the word Torah תורה

  • God with us Immanu El

  • nearly identical language is used in birth prophecies of forefathers of the three major monotheistic religions (please see Concept #3 in Oven of Achnai blog for more on this)

Isaiah 9:1

"The people walking in darkness have seen great light;

on those who dwell in land of shadow of death light has shined."

Isaiah 9:5

"For a child has been born to us,

son has been given to us,

and the government has been upon his shoulder;

and his name has been called

wonderful counsellor

everlasting Father

prince of peace."

Isaiah 11:1-2

Isaiah 12:3

from the wellsprings of salvation"

  • Messiah our living water flowing from Source of salvation

And the Lord said,

“Because this people draw near me,

and with their mouth and with their lips honor me,

but their heart is far from me,

and their reverence of me is a taught commandment of men;

Therefore behold I will proceed to amaze this people,

wonder of wonders;

and the wisdom of their wise men shall perish,

and the understanding of their prudent men will be hidden.”

  • sounds a lot like what Yeshua said to the Jewish leaders

  • obviously neither Isaiah nor Yeshua are anti-Semitic

Isaiah 40:3

and like a fog your transgressions;

return to Me,

for I have redeemed you."

  • the good news of Yeshua

  • fulfillment of blood sacrifice required for purity by Torah

"Come near to me,

hear this;

I have not spoken in secret from the beginning;

from the time that it was, there am I;

and now the Lord HaShem has sent me and His Spirit."

  • someone who has existed from the beginning is sent by God with the Holy Spirit

Isaiah 49:5-6

"And now has said HaShem

He who formed me from the womb to be His servant

and Israel will be gathered to Him;

and I have been honored in the sight of HaShem,

My God has been my strength.

'It is too little that you should be My servant

to raise up the tribes of Jacob

and to return the besieged of Israel;

I will also make you a light of nations,

that My salvation may reach the ends of the earth.'"

  • God forms His servant from womb to return Israel to Him and to be light to the nations

Isaiah 52:7

"How beautiful upon the mountains are feet of a herald,

announcing peace;

heralding good news,

announcing salvation;

saying to Zion, '

Your God has reigned!'"

  • Yeshua's message of personal peace and salvation from spiritual death is very good news!

Isaiah 53

  • the arm of HaShem

  • root from dry ground

  • righteous servant suffering from our sin

  • like lamb to slaughter Isaiah 53:7:

"He was oppressed and he was afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; like a lamb that is led to slaughter,

and like a sheep that is silent before its shearers, so he did not open his mouth."

  • God ordained Yeshua’s oppression and bearing guilt

  • his soul נַפְשׁ֔וֹ will see seed זֶרַע - not necessarily his own biological seed which would be זַרְעוֹ - please note that זֶרַע seed is used figuratively also in Isaiah 57:4 זֶרַע שָׁקֶר seed of deception

  • Yeshua is resurrected and eternally alive so his days are prolonged

  • the will of God succeeds in his hand Isaiah 53:10:

he will see seed,

he will prolong days,

and the desire of HaShem will succeed in his hand."

for all peoples.'

declares the Lord HaShem who gathers the dispersed of Israel,

'Yet others I will gather to it,

to those who are already gathered.'"

  • Yeshua came first to the Jews then to the Gentiles

Who is Messiah?

The Messiah, the promised anointed savior, is not referred to directly by this name anywhere in the Tanakh. Since the time of creation, the Spirit of God hovers over the face of the waters. The Creator speaks to us through His Word. Jews who do not recognize Yeshua still await human manifestation of Messiah.

Since the time of Yeshua, translation and interpretation of Tanakh became biased. Earlier Rabbinic views recognized the Spirit of Messiah existing before the material universe and prophecies of Messiah Ben Yosef, the suffering servant. The original followers of Yeshua were Jews rooted in Torah. But then Christianity merged with pagan customs and became a separate religion with different holidays and without Jewish understanding of scripture.

Let's compare the Bible to a home. The Tanakh (OT) is the land and ground floor. The Brit Chadashah (NT) is the second floor built on this foundation. Judaism tends to obscure the stairway, while Christianity often seems like the second floor floating in space.

Yet the truth of Yeshua, the Word made flesh, transcends separation between religions.

We need genuine Jewish understanding of Jesus! Yeshua performed many miracles expected of Messiah plus predicted his own death, resurrection, and return. His message and impact shine light to the nations.

Do we want to focus on traditions of men which divide us or on the spiritual reality which unites God's children? Jews and Christians have much to learn from each other as we join together in the Word of God.
